The Weight of the World

Darcy Robinson had long been used to being called chubby or fat behind her back. The young woman started gaining weight back in high school. It was then that Darcy first noticed that she wasn’t like everyone else.

It’s hard to say what exactly caused her weight problems. Despite the fact that Darcy was bullied often, she remained a kind and sympathetic teenager.

Moreover, Darcy wasn’t addicted to food and didn’t eat a lot of high-calorie foods, so that couldn’t have been the reason for her excess weight. Nevertheless, after she gained the excess weight, the never-ending ridicule and caustic nicknames from her peers became Darcy’s companions in life.

“Mom, what’s wrong with me? Why am I not like everyone else?”

Darcy asked with tears in her eyes.

Charlotte Robinson just shrugged her shoulders, not knowing what to tell her daughter. She wasn’t particularly thin either, and therefore she didn’t think it would be right for her to criticize her own daughter. Of course, Darcy was all too well aware that she looked nothing like the models on pages of all the fashion magazines.

At the time of graduation, Darcy weighed over 300 pounds, which quite expectedly turned her into an outcast. The young woman was made fun of and laughed at behind her back wherever she went.

Struggles and New Beginnings

Even though nobody dared to say anything to her face, they were never shy to discuss the woman’s figure behind her back. It’s hard to even imagine what Darcy had to go through while attending college.

And that’s despite the fact that she was one of the best students in the year. Unfortunately, people are often cruel to others and are all too willing to turn their life into a living hell.

However, the main problems in Darcy’s life began after graduation, and it was most likely because of her unsuccessful attempts to find a job. In most cases, she wasn’t even interviewed properly because the meeting usually ended even before it started.

It’s hard to say what criteria the employers used when hiring staff, but getting rejected time and time again, Darcy was getting desperate.

“What am I supposed to do now? Beg on the street?”

The woman thought sadly.

But then luck smiled at her when she met the owner of a small trading company. Alfred Brown valued his employees for their professionalism and diligence, and not for their looks.

Therefore, the businessman didn’t care the least bit for the fact that Darcy was a bit over the generally accepted norms in terms of her weight. Moreover, Mr. Brown even gave Darcy a promising position so that she could fulfill her potential.

A Professional Rise

Of course, there were still some unpleasant moments at the office, but that was because of the mistreatment she got from some of the other employees. Darcy repeatedly heard malicious chuckles behind her back and felt the mocking glances that the employees drilled into her.

Fortunately, after everything Darcy had to endure during her college years, she was already used to the fact that people first paid attention to her looks and only then to her mind. Having directed all of her efforts at doing great work, Darcy became one of the best employees at the company in just six months.

Having been promoted to a managerial position, the determined young woman managed to change the opinion of all the other employees and get them to respect her. That was when Michael appeared in her life.

The handsome young man got a job at the company thanks to his father’s connections; his father knew Alfred Brown personally. At first, most of the employees drew attention to the eligible young bachelor, but then the interest in the young man died down and Michael stopped being everyone’s favorite.

An Unexpected Romance

Since Darcy had already become the head of the department by that time, she had to interact with Michael quite often. Naturally, the young woman always made it a point of being very professional with him and never allowed herself any liberties.

Michael, however, tried to openly flirt with the boss, intending to win her heart. At first, Darcy took it as a joke, but when she realized that Michael’s intentions were serious, she started to slowly lower her guard.

First, they went out to dinner at a nice restaurant. Then they went to see a movie, and eventually, they spent a night at an expensive hotel together.

Darcy felt as if she was living in some kind of a fairy tale in which she spent a long time waiting for her Prince Charming, and now he’d finally arrived. Despite his youth, Michael turned out to be a very good boyfriend.

Flowers and expensive gifts succeeded each other in a whirlpool of dates and nights spent together. About a month after they started dating, Michael asked Darcy to move in with them.

Thus, the couple rented a nice house in the city and made it into their own cozy home. Everything was going great at first.

Darcy felt like she’d pulled out a lucky ticket in life. After all, Michael was a very attentive and caring boyfriend, and handsome too, turning the heads of random women on the street.

“So that’s what happiness feels like,”

Darcy thought, looking at her own reflection in the mirror.
