My Wife Refused To Adopt Because Of “Bad Genetics.” Then We Met A Boy With My Secret Birthmark. Am I Wrong For Wanting Him?
A Match Made in Heaven
Chris and April met at one of the student Thanksgiving parties. The young people immediately took a liking to each other, and it seemed as if this union was approved in heaven and the Cupid zero had hit right on target. April was in her senior year at the time, getting ready to become a teacher, and Chris was preparing to start an internship at one of the city’s prominent firms.
Even though the young people had been in a relationship for only a few months, it was already clear to their friends and acquaintances that their wedding was just around the corner. The only problem was that April’s mother clearly disapproved of her future son-in-law.
“Don’t rush to tie yourself with this man. I don’t like Chris. Poor… his parents some kind of poor alcoholics?”
Mrs. Moore asked, emphasizing the last word.
April looked at her mother with obvious disapproval in response but refrained from commenting. The fact was that Chris never knew his father and his mother did abuse alcohol during her younger years. But despite having lived a wild life for several years, Pamela Roberts still managed to get out of the ruinous lifestyle and raise a beautiful son.
Feeling embarrassed about his past, Chris was extremely reluctant to talk about his childhood and, at any mention of it, asked to be considered an orphan. Of course, April understood that painful memories had an extremely negative effect on the state of mind of her fiancé, and therefore she preferred to stay away from this awkward topic. In all other respects, the rapidly developing relationship made April feel happy and optimistic, and her love for her intelligent and faithful fiancée bordered on admiration.
Building a Life Together
Fortunately, despite all the obstacles from April’s mother, their wedding still happened. By that time, Chris had already gotten his degree in economics and was on a probationary period with one of Chicago’s trading firms. Living together only strengthened the feelings of the young people, who fell in love with each other at first sight.
After graduating from university, April got a job as an English teacher at her old high school. United by a common goal to achieve financial stability, April and Chris worked with enviable determination to benefit their small family. Of course, at that point, the newlyweds felt that the question of children was premature and not even worth of much attention.
Seven years flew by. During this time, Chris and April had bought a house in a good neighborhood and a car for each of them. It seemed to the young couple that true happiness was very close, and all they had to do was reach their hand out and grab it by the ghostly tail.
The Struggle for a Child
It was then that the couple decided that it was time for them to have a child. Until that time, all the efforts of Chris and April were aimed more at achieving financial prosperity than at growing their family. Unfortunately, everything wasn’t as easy as the couple hoped it to be.
The fact was that after a thorough medical examination, the doctors diagnosed April with a rather rare genetic disorder which nullified her chances of getting pregnant. However, having gotten the disappointing news, the couple didn’t give up and started looking for alternative methods to solve their problem.
“Honey, what if we try artificial insemination? They say that in some cases this method shows amazing results,”
April suggested, looking at her husband with hope.
“I don’t mind of course, but it’s still unlikely that you will be able to get pregnant, my dear. After all, the doctors made it clear that only a miracle could help us,”
Chris drawled without much enthusiasm.
The fact was that after a series of unsuccessful attempts to get his wife pregnant, he was ready to adopt a child from an orphanage. Unfortunately, April was against becoming a mother to a foster baby.
“Only the kids of alcoholics and drug addicts end up at orphanages. I don’t know about you, but I definitely don’t want a child with such bad genetics,”
April started saying but stopped mid-sentence, having looked at Chris.
Shadows of the Past
The woman wanted to feel all the delights of pregnancy so desperately that she even forgot for a moment about some facts from her husband’s life that he was hopelessly trying to put behind him. The truth was that at the age of five years, Chris almost ended up at an orphanage himself.
Few of Chris’s acquaintances knew that he had an older sister whose name was Nancy. The age difference between them was only two years, so it didn’t significantly affect the relationship between the two siblings. During that memorable summer, Pamela Roberts met a man named Duncan.
He moved into her dilapidated house just a few weeks later and started quickly acting as if he owned the place. It was fast and so unceremonious that even five-year-old Chris and his slightly older sister realized that serious changes were coming into their lives. That was because Duncan Watson wasn’t an alcoholic unlike Pamela and even had a permanent job at a construction site.
Unfortunately, the new tenant wasn’t a good person, so Chris and Nancy instantly felt the threat emanating from him. The fact was that having settled in his new girlfriend’s house, Duncan immediately established his own rules which were based on unquestioning obedience and discipline.
A Cruel Stepfather
The cruel man could punish Chris and Nancy even if he simply thought they were playing too loud or if they forgot to clear the table after eating. At the same time, Pamela Roberts didn’t do anything to help her children, who were forced to live in a state of eternal fear.
The most surprising part was that Duncan treated the two children in completely different ways. If Chris could count on getting at least some encouragement in the form of a candy bar or other sweets once in a while, then Nancy could only count on yet another portion of criticism seasoned with some strong language.
It was hard to say why Duncan disliked the little girl so much. Unfortunately, he felt this way from the very first days at their house. It was most likely because of Nancy’s character more than anything; the girl loved the truth and was never shy about voicing it. That could have been why Duncan had started that strange conversation one day.
“Pamela, I feel like we don’t have enough money to raise two kids. Especially this applies to the unbearable girl who behaves like a princess,”
The man announced after clearing his throat.
Mrs. Roberts looked at her boyfriend in surprise and, from the man’s feverishly shining eyes, realized he was up to something bad.
“I think we should take Nancy to an orphanage at least for a while, and then we’ll see. I hope they will teach her some manners there and to show respect for her elders,”
Duncan said, having mustered up his courage.
