After 40-years Of Marriage, My Husband Said “You Are Useless. Let Us Get Divorced. “
The Strange Change
I expected to continue spending my days with my husband. However, as my husband turned 60, something strange began to happen. It was a little thing that triggered this.
“I’ve been trying to say this to you for a long time, but are you bad at cooking?”
“What? What made you say that out of nowhere?”
“I get bored with the same kind of dishes every time.”
“What makes you say that now? Until now, you never complained about it. Besides, I’ve been trying to come up with a variety of dishes that you’d enjoy.”
“There are simply too few options. You must have had plenty of time to get better at this, but why?”
“Then let me ask you, have you ever cooked even once? I’ve been cooking every day while caring for the children. I believe I deserve some words of gratitude from you.”
“Oh, come on. Don’t get mad at me like that. We’re just having a conversation.”
“I’m not upset. It’s because you started saying something strange.”
“Hey, don’t get serious. I’m tired of this. Let us end.”
He was the one to start. What was that all about? That was the end for that day.
Since then, he began to frequently complain about the housework, not only about dishes.
“Are you sure you cleaned this part? The entire space is dusty. Don’t you think you’re not even very good at cleaning?”
“I’m doing fine. Besides, you cannot completely remove dust. It’s impossible.”
“You always make such excuses. You are only becoming good at making excuses.”
My husband kept complaining no matter what I did. Why does he keep interrupting me? He has never done any housework. Why doesn’t he do it himself if he doesn’t like what I do? He never tries to do things by himself.
For some reason, he eventually began complaining about everything I did, and it became absurd for me to take housework seriously, so I stopped. I assumed that my husband would be at home all the time once he retired, so I thought it would be a good idea to get him used to doing housework. This, however, seemed to irritate my husband even more.
“Isn’t it that our dinner is getting too simple these days?”
“Really? Well, you should become accustomed to this way of life considering our near future.”
“Are you going to make me eat this kind of food every day after I retire? I used to make two good dishes.”
“I have to think about saving money from now.”
“You just want to keep it easy, don’t you? Make dinner once more right now. I’m not going to eat this.”
“Don’t be ridiculous. I don’t have any more ingredients to make another one.”
“Then go out and get it.”
“Hey, something has gone wrong with you recently. Why are you complaining about my housework? You never complained before.”
“It’s my fault for spoiling you up to this point. That’s why I’m being sick right now.”
“I’m not sure what you’re saying.”
I was confused because I really didn’t understand what my husband was up to. Was he becoming more angry as he approached 60, or was this a symptom of an illness?
Suspicion and Investigation
I decided to consult with my son and daughter because I was concerned. They are both in their 40s, married, and have children. My husband’s father-in-law is 67 years old, but I would never have heard of him becoming more irritable with age.
“Well, I suppose it depends on the individual’s personality. Dad didn’t do the housework for a long time, but he never looked arrogant. I recall him playing with me quite a bit. That’s all I remember.”
“You took care of the house and everything for us, isn’t that right, Mom?”
“That’s correct.”
“Now that I have my own child, I realize how much work you had to do on your own. Thank you.”
“Both of you, is something wrong with our dad? Perhaps he is having an affair or something.”
“Don’t be a moron. He can’t possibly be having an affair. He’s rich at the age of 64.”
“Sorry, I was just kidding around.”
“Don’t worry about it. You are welcome to come see me whenever you are upset. I’m sure my kids will appreciate your presence. Come see me as well, my sons will be delighted to see you.”
“Thank you so much. You too.”
I was overjoyed that my children had grown up to be loving and dependable parents. Although I was not paying attention to what my son was saying at the time, I was strangely intrigued by what he was saying. He was about to retire, but he occasionally arrives home late from work.
No way. Just in case, I requested an investigation from an agency, and as I had not expected, it turned out that my husband betrayed me. His partner was a single woman who appeared to be a few years younger than me.
I had assumed that he was not having an affair, but I was astounded to discover that he was. My husband immediately made me sick. Maybe it would be more accurate to say I was disgusted.
When I told my son and daughter about it, they were both disappointed. My son was shocked that what I said at random had come true. Divorce was the only option in my mind.
I decided to look for a new apartment as soon as possible. This was to make sure I had a place to live in case he kicked me out of the home. Most of the real estate agencies were reluctant to rent rooms to me because of my age, so I had a difficult time finding a room. It took some time, but I was able to make a contract on a new apartment.
That was fortunately around the time my husband was about to retire.
The Retirement Day
Finally, my husband’s retirement date arrived. As soon as he got home from work, my husband called me into the living room.
“What? What would you like to discuss?”
“Well, come sit here.”
When I sat in front of him, he grinned.
“You are no longer of any use to me. Let us get divorced. I will get all the retirement money. I’m sure it will be about more than 250,000 US dollars. You don’t intend to take a cut of it, do you?”
What he said astounded me.
“It’s your fault. You skip housework, make excuses, and are being an arrogant wife.”
“I see. Then please send me the divorce papers as soon as possible.”
“What? Divorce, right? Aren’t you surprised?”
I said divorce.
“What’s the matter? Do you want a divorce or not? Make it clear.”
“Yes, I want a divorce, and the retirement money will be all mine. There will be no property division.”
“I see.”
My husband looked confused, as if he didn’t think I’d accept the divorce so easily.
“Oh, here are the divorce papers.”
I took the divorce papers that my husband had already filled out and quickly filled in my section.
“Well, I’ll file it tomorrow. Then I’ll start packing my belongings.”
“Are you leaving right now? Do you have a place to go? Do you have to ask that to someone leaving?”
“No, it’s just that I felt you said yes so quickly.”
I ignored him and continued packing my belongings. I finally finished packing and removed the suitcases from the house. I told my husband, who appeared uneasy in the living room,
“Okay, I’m leaving.”
“Oh, I see. You get ready so quickly.”
“Oh yeah, take a look at this. This is evidence of your affair. I’ll consult with my lawyer about alimony and other issues.”
“What?”
My husband became pale as I placed the evidence photos and investigation results on the table.
“Bye. Thank you for everything so far. Bye.”
He stood motionless and couldn’t hear what I was saying. I had a glance at him and laughed a little. Then I relocated to my new home.
