“That’s highly unlikely, Mr. King. I grew up in an orphanage. The caregiver said that my mother died in childbirth,” Lois answered with a sad sigh.

Of course, the woman understood perfectly well that she didn’t have anything in common with the rich banker as they lived in two completely different worlds. The first month flew by very quickly and Lois finally got her first salary.

A Small Celebration and a Sudden Crisis

Sure it wasn’t much, but the young mother had long grown used to having to make do with very little. Nevertheless, Lois still arranged a small celebration for her little daughter and bought her fruit juice as well as various treats that children her age love so much.

Looking at Nancy’s happy face, Lois furtively brushed away her tears, which for the first time in months were tears of joy instead of despair. Unfortunately, the woman had no idea that the very next morning her life would change again and give her a whole new set of problems which would be very difficult to solve.

It all started with the fact that Samuel King was horrified to discover some important documents were missing from his safe. Moreover, the safe wasn’t broken into, which suggested that it was an inside job.

Of course, Samuel King trusted his employees and therefore didn’t want to rush to any conclusions. The fact was that almost the entire staff had been successfully working together side by side for over a year and therefore the director couldn’t wrap his head around the possibility that one of them could be the culprit.

To Samuel’s surprise, it was his wife Kate who helped him get on the trail of the mysterious thief. “You should take a closer look at this cleaning lady, dear. You can’t deny the fact that the documents were lost almost immediately after she got the job,” said Kate, hiding a grin in the corners of her lips.

“Moreover, she spends a lot of time in your office,” said Kate.

Accusations and the Private Eye

Of course, Samuel King couldn’t believe that Lois could have stolen documents, but on the other hand, it was still worth looking into. Therefore, the very next day, Lois Evans found herself questioned by the bank security team.

“I don’t know anything about any documents. I just watered the plants in Mr. King’s office,” Lois kept repeating with tears in her eyes.

“I don’t even know what documents he keeps in a safe,” Lois kept repeating.

Nevertheless, following the suggestions of the director’s wife, the security team still accused the cleaner of theft. Sure they didn’t have any evidence, so their conclusion was based solely on speculation.

Since Lois Evans didn’t admit to anything, she was temporarily suspended from work until the situation was resolved. At the same time, the woman naively sought support in the eyes of Mr. King, who deep down didn’t really believe that she was guilty.

The idea that such a sweet and kind woman could turn out to be a conniving thief didn’t seem plausible to the director. “I have to get to the bottom of this. If she is guilty, we’ll punish her, and if not, I’ll personally apologize to her,” Samuel King thought methodically, looking through the phone numbers in his notebook.

Being a wise man, the banker knew that he couldn’t fully trust the bank security team and therefore he decided to get an independent investigator to look into the situation. Samuel King didn’t mind paying a substantial fee for the PI service, since he was sure that the PI would certainly be able to deal with the situation and find the real culprit.

The Investigation’s Shocking Reveal

The investigation took about a week. One could only guess what the poor cleaning lady had to go through during this time, being accused of stealing and spying for competitors.

“God, what did I do to deserve all this? I didn’t do anything wrong. I just did my job,” whispered Lois, sobbing.

During the investigation, the woman was asked to go on leave, which actually felt more like house arrest. Finally, the PI gave the banker the full investigation report.

The weighty folder had dossiers and short biographies of all the employees that worked at the bank at the time of the theft. Having skimmed through the names, Mr. King stopped on the file of the new cleaning lady.

What the banker learned from the single mother’s file made him uneasy. “Is this true?” asked Mr. King, turning pale.

“Yes, sir, everything in this file is true. That’s my job and I’m good at it,” the detective answered with a smile.

Samuel King immediately called his personal driver, asking him to take the director to the house of Lois Evans. On his way over, the banker couldn’t stop repeating in a quiet voice, “No, that can’t be true.”

A Father’s Long-Lost Daughter

Seeing the director at her door, Lois immediately turned pale, lowering her eyes. But instead of hearing accusations, she heard something more shocking and incredible.

“Well, hello daughter. Tell me, was your mother’s name Selena Lopez?” asked Mr. King with tears in his eyes.

Kate was so desperate to get her rival out of the way that she was willing to do anything for it. To the chagrin of the young thief, she didn’t take into account that her husband could hire a private detective.

The PI quickly found out about her affair as well as the fact that Kate’s lover was only with her for her money. Upon learning of the affair, Samuel immediately filed for divorce.

Thanks to the prenup they signed before getting married, Kate didn’t get anything in the divorce. Now that Samuel had a daughter and a little granddaughter, his life got a whole new meaning and was filled with laughter and happiness.
