He Left Me Alone on Our Anniversary… Then Brought His Mistress Into My Bed — So I Took Everything and Walked Away
I read through pages of reviews on different legal websites.
One name kept showing up in comments from other women who had been cheated on.
Juliet Howell.
Her reviews said she was direct and didn’t waste time. One woman wrote that Juliet made her ex-husband cry during the settlement meeting. Another said Juliet got her everything she deserved plus more.
I called the number on her website, and a receptionist answered. I explained my situation in basic terms. Husband cheated. I left. Need divorce.
The receptionist said Juliet had an opening that afternoon at two.
I took it.
Juliet’s office was in a tall building downtown with marble floors and expensive art on the walls. The elevator smelled like leather and coffee. Her waiting room had fancy magazines, water bottles, and a mini fridge.
A receptionist told me to have a seat, and Juliet would be with me in a few minutes.
I sat on a leather couch that was nicer than any furniture I had ever owned.
Ten minutes later, the receptionist walked me back to an office with huge windows overlooking the city. Juliet stood up from behind a massive wooden desk. She was maybe fifty, with short gray hair and a navy suit.
She shook my hand with a firm grip and gestured to a chair across from her desk.
I sat down, and she picked up a yellow legal pad and a pen. She told me to start from the beginning and tell her everything.
So I did.
I explained the anniversary dinner and Kirk leaving me at the restaurant. I told her about finding him in our bed with Brooke. I described how he asked me to leave so he could sort through his feelings. I explained packing up everything I owned and emptying half the house before dawn.
Juliet wrote notes the entire time without interrupting once.
When I finished, she put down her pen and looked at me. She said Kirk sounded like an entitled jerk who thought he could have everything his way. Then she said we were going to make him regret every single choice he made.
That sentence did more for me than she probably realized.
Juliet explained that everything I took from the house was completely legal. The furniture I bought before we got married belonged to me. The gifts from my family were mine. The things I paid for with my own money were mine.
Kirk couldn’t claim I stole anything because none of it was his property.
She said his affair gave us excellent grounds for divorce. In our state, adultery mattered for settlements, which meant I had a strong position in any negotiation. Kirk was the one who broke our marriage contract, and that gave me leverage.
Juliet asked about our assets. I told her about the house, the joint savings, and Kirk’s retirement account from work. She made notes about everything.
She asked if I had proof of the affair.
I said I saw them together in our bed and Kirk admitted it.
She said that was enough.
Then she asked if I wanted to try counseling or mediation first. I said no. I wanted a divorce as fast as possible.
She nodded and said we’d file the papers that day.
We spent the next hour going through paperwork. Juliet had forms already prepared. She filled in our names, the grounds for divorce, and the date we got married. She listed adultery as the reason for dissolution.
She wrote down that I was requesting an equal division of marital assets. She explained that meant splitting the value of the house, the savings, and Kirk’s retirement contributions during the marriage.
Everything we built together would be divided fairly.
She said the process server would deliver the papers to Kirk at his office the next day.
I liked that idea.
He humiliated me by bringing Brooke to our home. Now he would get served divorce papers at work where all his co-workers could see.
Juliet signed the forms and made copies for me. She said Kirk would have thirty days to respond, and then we would start negotiating the settlement.
She told me to keep records of everything. Save all texts and emails. Document any contact Kirk tried to make. Write down dates and times.
Everything could be useful later.
I thanked her and wrote a check for her retainer fee. She walked me to the door and told me to call if Kirk tried anything stupid.
I drove back to Alexandra’s apartment feeling lighter than I had in days. Having a plan made everything feel less scary. Juliet knew what she was doing, and she was not going to let Kirk push me around.
Alexandra was making lunch when I got back. She asked how the meeting went, and I told her Juliet was perfect and we had already filed the papers.
Alexandra hugged me and said she was proud of me for taking action so quickly.
Then she said I could stay with her as long as I needed.
I appreciated the offer, but I knew I couldn’t live on her couch forever. I needed my own place, somewhere that was just mine.
I pulled out my phone and started looking at apartment listings. I searched for one-bedroom places near my work. Most of them were expensive, more than I wanted to pay, but I had money from the joint account and I would get more from the house eventually.
I could afford something decent if I was careful.
I marked three apartments that looked good and had availability within the next month. I planned to call them the next day and set up tours.
Kirk got served at his office the following morning. I know because Juliet called me at eleven to say the process server confirmed delivery. She said Kirk looked shocked when he realized what the papers were.
He tried to argue with the process server, but the guy just walked away.
Within an hour, Juliet’s phone rang. A lawyer named Hugh Kavanaugh introduced himself as Kirk’s attorney. Juliet put him on speaker so I could hear.
Hugh said his client wanted to discuss the situation before things got contentious.
Juliet said there was nothing to discuss. Kirk committed adultery and I wanted a divorce.
Hugh tried to suggest mediation.
