I Caught My Boyfriend With the “Roommate He Said Was Like a Sister” — Then I Woke Up Wearing His Best Friend’s Ring
I looked across the kitchen table at Danny and saw him clearly for the first time. He had been showing up for me for two years while Blake couldn’t even be bothered to pick me up from the airport. Danny brought me coffee when Blake left me stranded. Danny listened when Blake forgot my promotion. Danny had been the one who was actually there while Blake was busy with Tessa.
I called Blake back.
He answered on the first ring and immediately started talking about how glad he was that I had come to my senses. I cut him off and told him we were done. I said he could have whatever twisted relationship he wanted with Tessa because I wasn’t interested in being part of it anymore.
His voice changed from smug to angry in a second. He said I was overreacting like I always did. He said I knew Tessa was important to him and that I had agreed to be understanding about their friendship.
I told him I hadn’t agreed to anything except being lied to and disrespected for two years. Then he kept talking, saying I was throwing away our relationship over nothing, and I hung up on him in the middle of his sentence.
Danny was trying not to smile. Lorie actually cheered and said she had been waiting two years for me to dump that loser. She high-fived me across the table and declared that this called for celebration pancakes, which apparently were different from regular pancakes because they tasted like freedom.
Then I remembered I still had a key to Blake’s apartment and he had one to mine. We needed to exchange belongings and keys before this turned into even more of a mess.
Danny immediately offered to go with me so I wouldn’t have to deal with Blake alone. Lorie said she would go to my apartment in case Blake showed up there trying to get his stuff or cause drama. She said she had been waiting for an excuse to tell Blake exactly what she thought of him.
We finished breakfast, and I borrowed some of Lorie’s clothes since mine from the night before smelled like tequila and regret.
Danny grabbed his truck keys and we headed out.
The drive to Blake’s apartment felt different from every other time I had gone there. I wasn’t worried about what mood he would be in or whether Tessa would be there making snide comments. I just wanted my things and I wanted to be done.
When we pulled up outside his building, I saw Blake’s car in the lot. Danny parked and asked if I wanted him to come upstairs with me. I said yes, because I didn’t trust Blake not to try manipulating me if I went in alone.
We went up to the second floor and I knocked on the door. Tessa answered wearing Blake’s shirt and nothing else.
She looked smug, like she had won some kind of prize. I handed her Blake’s key and asked for my stuff.
Tessa leaned against the doorframe and said Blake had already taken my things to my apartment about an hour earlier. Then she said he figured I’d come crawling back once I calmed down and realized what I was giving up.
I asked her what exactly I was giving up.
Her smirk widened and she said a guy who knew how to have fun and didn’t expect her to be boring and jealous all the time.
Danny stepped forward and said we were leaving. Tessa called after us that Blake would be better off without someone as uptight as me.
We drove back to my apartment and found black trash bags on my doorstep.
Blake had dumped my belongings outside like I was garbage he was throwing away.
Lorie was already there and had started bringing the bags inside. She looked furious and said she couldn’t believe Blake had the nerve to treat my things like that.
We carried everything in and I started going through the bags. My clothes were wrinkled and shoved in without any care. My books had bent covers. My toiletries from his bathroom had been thrown in loose without caps, and they were leaking everywhere.
Then I found the three things Blake had given me over two years. A cheap necklace from a mall kiosk for my birthday. A coffee mug with a stupid joke on it for Christmas. A keychain from some bar his band had played at.
He had taken them all back.
Danny watched me pull them out and quietly said that his grandmother’s ring was still on my finger. He repeated that I could keep it as long as I wanted. The truth was, it already meant more to me than anything Blake had ever given me anyway.
My phone rang, and it was Savannah from work. She said she’d heard through friends what happened at Blake’s show and wanted to make sure I was okay.
I told her everything. I told her about finding Blake with Tessa, getting drunk, and waking up at Danny’s place the next morning.
Savannah said she had never liked Blake anyway. She said she always thought I deserved way better than some bartender who couldn’t even remember my promotion. Then she told me the whole office had been talking about how Blake didn’t show up to the company party I had invited him to last month because Tessa needed him to help her move furniture.
She said everyone thought I was too good for him, but nobody wanted to say anything because I had seemed happy.
I told her I wasn’t happy. I was just used to making excuses for him.
Savannah invited me over for dinner that night with some friends from work. She said I needed to be around people who actually appreciated me instead of sitting alone feeling sorry for myself.
I agreed and asked what time. She said six o’clock and told me to bring Danny if he wanted to come.
I looked over at Danny, who was helping Lorie fold my clothes properly and put them away, and asked if he wanted to go. He said sure, if I wanted him there.
We finished organizing my apartment, and later Danny drove me to Savannah’s place across town. She lived in a nice complex with a pool and actual parking spaces, which somehow felt luxurious after the chaos of the last twenty-four hours.
When she opened the door, she immediately pulled me into a hug. Then she saw Danny behind me and grabbed his arm and pulled him inside too, saying anyone who had treated me this well was absolutely welcome in her home.
Inside, four women from my accounting firm were sitting around the dining table with pizza boxes and wine bottles spread everywhere. Savannah introduced me to Michelle from accounts payable, Jenna from tax prep, and Kira from HR.
Danny stood awkwardly near the door until Savannah dragged him over to the couch.
Michelle immediately launched into a story about her ex maxing out three credit cards buying gifts for his side girlfriend. Jenna topped that with a story about her ex faking a business trip to Vegas and actually taking his coworker to Hawaii. Kira said her ex borrowed her car to help his sick mother, but she found receipts for a hotel room and dinner for two.
Then everybody looked at me.
I told them about finding Blake with Tessa in the green room. Michelle slammed her wine glass down and said Blake sounded like trash. Jenna asked how long Tessa had been living with him, and when I said two years, the entire time we were dating, Kira shook her head and said she couldn’t believe I had put up with that situation for so long.
