The Detective’s Investigation

At first, the officer on duty simply refused to take her statement.

“Don’t get me wrong, ma’am. I simply can’t start an investigation based on your speculation alone. I need facts and evidence. And what do you have? Indistinct testimony and a strange recording from a surveillance camera?” The police officer said, hiding a smile in the corner of his lips.

Other officers nodded as if to confirm their colleague’s words, adding that they had enough real cases to solve. However, when Linda started to feel desperate, one of the detectives expressed interest in her case.

Bill Thompson was a very responsible police officer who treated everyone with equal respect and never refused to help. Having promised Linda to look into her case, Bill asked her to be careful and to not tell her husband that she had turned to the police.

“Thank you. I did not expect anyone to take me seriously at this point,” Linda said, brushing away a tear.

Bill watched the woman leave and couldn’t help but feel genuinely amazed at how she looked like his late wife, who died in a car accident five years ago.

Back home, Linda had yet another unpleasant conversation with her husband. This time he told her that she forgot to turn off the water in the bathroom.

“I’m sorry, honey, you’re probably right. I do need to see a doctor. I’ll do that as soon as possible,” Linda lied without batting an eye.

Meanwhile, she was waiting to see what would turn up in the course of the investigation that Bill Thompson had taken on. The police officer called her five days after taking her statement and asked her to meet him at a cafe.

Feeling very agitated, Linda agreed to the meeting, unaware that her whole life would be turned upside down very soon. As it turned out, there was a good reason why Bill Thompson had a reputation as one of the best detectives at the precinct.

His investigation showed that Howard Davis was planning to pull off an ingenious scam. The fact was that the seemingly perfect husband and father had been having an affair for quite some time.

The Truth Revealed

Being great at hiding his betrayal, Howard hoped that one day he’d be able to get a divorce. There was only one problem that was stopping Howard from taking that step: in the event of a divorce, the couple would have to divide the property.

Howard knew that his wealthy parents would side with Linda, and Gina would leave most of their assets to them. At some point, Howard was even willing to give up on his plans.

But then his mistress came to his aid. She came up with an ingenious solution that would allow them to get rid of Linda once and for all. It was the mistress who persuaded Howard to make his wife look crazy.

Howard liked the idea so much that he immediately set to work. Thus, the man didn’t just throw clothes out of the closets, but also turned on the record of female laughter in order to convince his wife of her insanity.

Pushing Linda to seek psychiatric treatment, Howard tried to get her mental condition into her medical record. Thus, when he would go to the court during the divorce, Linda’s mental disorder would play out in Howard’s favor.

He would get legal custody of his daughter, Gina, and would thus convince his wealthy parents that it would be inappropriate for them to provide Linda with financial assistance, who would be exposed as a crazy person.

A New Beginning

At the end of his report, Bill Thompson urged Linda to get a divorce and get custody of her daughter.

“Trust me, your husband is a very dangerous person. Of course, I will do my best to protect you, but who knows what else he could do to achieve his goal,” Bill added, shaking the woman’s hand in parting.

Linda understood that the detective was right, and therefore she took Gina and moved out of Howard’s house the very next day. She also filed for divorce right away.

Just a month later, the unfaithful husband got just what he wanted—well, except for his parents’ help, which he no longer could count on. Now he had to learn to only count on himself.

Deep down, Howard always remained immature and, left without the support of his parents and wife, realized what a fatal mistake he’d made. The true wake-up call, however, came six months into his marriage to his mistress, when she left him for a richer and more promising man.

Meanwhile, Linda decided to start her life anew, and Bill Thompson was more than happy to help her, since he liked her from the very moment they met. Now next to the strong and confident man, Linda felt loved and no longer had to worry that her husband would deceive her or make her look crazy.
