A Stormy Night in the Past

Stefan buttoned up his jacket, pulled the hood over his head, and left the comfort of his car. The wind was raging outside, which only intensified the effect of the heavy rain. Stefan had to walk about a quarter of a mile in the pouring rain before he reached the nearest house. The young man walked up to the building and gently knocked on the window.

Soon he heard someone unlock the door, which made him breathe a sigh of relief. A second later, the door opened, and a miniature young woman in her 20s appeared on the threshold. As soon as she saw the soaking wet young man standing in front of her, she silently stepped aside and led him into the house.

As it turned out later, the stranger’s name was Rachel. She was home alone because her mother was getting treatment at the hospital and her older sister went into the city for the day. Having listened to Stefan’s confusing story, she escorted him to the bathroom, after which she put together a simple dinner and invited him to the table.

To the young man’s delight, Rachel turned out to be a pleasant companion who helped him distract himself from the sad thoughts about his broken car. Listening to Rachel’s cheerful chatter, Stefan caught himself thinking that he really enjoyed talking to her. Inadvertently, Stefan felt a surge of strong sympathy for this fragile young woman with the eyes of a Bambi deer.

The sympathy turned out to be mutual, and Stefan quickly felt it. Thus, when the young people found themselves sharing their first kiss, neither one of them was surprised. Giving into the feeling of passion, Stefan and Rachel realized that they might never see each other again.

It is hard to say why the relationship didn’t develop any further. Most likely, Stefan simply didn’t realize what a beautiful gift fate had given him that night. He did try to find Rachel later, but he never succeeded—although, truth be told, he didn’t try all that hard.

“I’m sorry. I made a mistake. It’s just that you look so much like Rachel. Where is she?” Stefan muttered.

Monica suddenly turned pale, and her breathing became heavy and ragged. Having gathered her courage, she asked Billy to go into another room and close the door behind him. Then Monica looked into the eyes of her guest and said,

Stefan felt dizzy. Only then did the businessman realize that Billy could be his son. The realization of the cruel truth made Stefan start sweating profusely. It was clear from the woman’s face that she was in a whole lot of pain, but she tried not to show it and never said a single word about it.

Looking at Monica from time to time, Stefan caught himself thinking that she was a spitting image of her sister. Feeling guilty over how things turned out with Rachel, Stefan decided to help her younger sister. Having said goodbye to Monica and her son, the man went home.

The businessman wanted to find out exactly how much money he needed to pull out of his business in order to pay for Monica’s surgery without putting it off. Stefan immediately called the hospital that specialized in Monica’s condition. Despite the fact that the amount turned out to be quite large, Stefan volunteered to pay for the surgery. In order to confirm the seriousness of his intentions, he transferred part of the amount into the hospital’s account.

Redemption and a New Life

At first, Monica wanted to reject his help, thinking that the man had some ulterior motive since she was convinced that there were no people in this world that could simply be so kind. But when the woman realized the man’s true motives, her surprise knew no bounds. After all, standing in front of her was Billy’s father, who in an unexpected twist of fate caught his own son in the basement of his new house.

The ways of the Lord are truly inscrutable. Having told Monica what happened 7 years ago, Stefan apologized for failing to find her sister back then.

“If I did it, maybe things could have turned out differently,” the businessman whispered with tears in his eyes.

The last thing Monica expected was that she could forgive the man who was indirectly responsible for the death of her older sister. Nevertheless, she gave Stefan a hug and whispered,

Stefan knelt down and took the woman’s hand. At that moment, the businessman wished for only one thing: for the surgery to be successful and for Monica to get better. On the day of the surgery, Stefan was literally beside himself with worry. The man was willing to give up everything in his life in order for Billy’s mother to feel the long-awaited relief.

Fortunately, Stefan’s prayers were heard, and the very next day he found out that the doctors had done the impossible and literally snatched Monica from the clutches of death. Needless to say, the young businessman was both relieved and extremely happy. For the first time in his life, he realized that he had done something truly good.

After it became finally clear that Monica was getting better, Stefan started visiting her in the hospital almost every day, never failing to bring her a bouquet of roses. At the same time, he couldn’t help but keep noting how much she looked just like her late sister.

After Monica was released from the hospital, Stefan asked her to take him to the cemetery so he could ask for forgiveness from the woman who gave him his only son. It just so happened that having met Monica once, Stefan stayed in her life forever, eventually becoming her faithful and loving husband.
