A New Friend for Kevin

But when Richard’s home came into view, the little girl exclaimed in surprise: “Wow, do you really live in such a place?”

The businessman smiled. “Yes, I do. Together with my son, and there’s also some help around. By the way, there’s a swimming pool behind the house and a tennis court.”

Molly’s joy knew no bounds. Her eyes made it clear to Richard that she’d never been to a place like that before; an orphanage could hardly compete with his house.

Meanwhile, the celebration was in full swing at the house. However, the birthday boy himself was surprisingly calm and sometimes even openly sad. But upon seeing a strange girl his age next to his father, Kevin brightened up noticeably and looked at the guest with undisguised interest.

“Son, Molly came to spend your birthday with you. Have fun and don’t be sad,” Richard said, emphasizing the last phrase.

A Joyful Afternoon

At first, Molly and Kevin were rather restrained and seemed very shy of each other’s company. But half an hour later, the kiddos got comfortable and seamlessly moved to Kevin’s room where they started playing some rather noisy game.

Peeking cautiously through the partially open door, Richard smiled. Frankly speaking, he hadn’t seen his son so happy in a long time. Laughing joyfully, Kevin and Molly played hide-and-seek and even ran around.

Albeit the guest tried to let the birthday boy win since he still couldn’t move around without his wheelchair. The evening seemed to fly by, and when it started getting dark outside, Richard told the kiddos that it was time for them to go to bed.

Since there were two beds in Kevin’s room, there was no question as to where little Molly would sleep. After the tiring day, Richard slept like a log. He had a day off, so he could afford to sleep in.

The Disappearance

Lying in bed, Richard noted that the house was unnaturally quiet. “Is Kevin still asleep? That doesn’t seem like him,”

Having decided to find out what was going on, the businessman got out of bed and approached his son’s bedroom. Richard listened carefully and realized there was an unusual silence in his son’s bedroom.

Considering the time of day, Richard quickly opened the door and froze in astonishment. The bedroom was empty. Molly and Kevin’s beds were neatly made, but they were missing.

Richard rushed outside and almost immediately noticed the tracks left behind by his son’s wheelchair. Oh God, Kevin must have been kidnapped. What else could it be? That little beggar must have tricked him out of the house.

The Confrontation

Terrifying thoughts ran through the businessman’s mind. Meanwhile, he didn’t even consider the fact that he was the one who invited Molly into his home. The businessman jumped into his car and drove towards the nearest police station to report his missing son.

Richard’s head was full of the most disturbing thoughts. However, before he could go a mile, he saw Molly and Kevin headed towards the city park.

A woman in her 30s was walking beside the children; apparently, it was someone who knew Molly. Richard slammed the brakes and jumped out of the car.

“Son! Kevin! What happened? Why did you leave home?”

The boy turned around and looked guiltily as he spoke to his father. “I’m sorry, Dad. We decided to see Molly’s mom to tell her she was fine so she wouldn’t start worrying. Molly wanted to go alone, but I decided to go with her.”

The Truth Revealed

Richard’s cheeks reddened with anger. “Couldn’t you have at least warned me? I was beside myself with worry. How could you do something like this? And what are you even talking about? What mother? Molly’s an orphan, isn’t she?”

Kevin looked at Molly as if seeking support, but the girl didn’t know what to say either. Fortunately, the conversation was interrupted by the woman who had been watching everything with a rather indifferent look.

“Why doesn’t Molly have a mother? She does have a mother, actually. It was her father who died in the construction accident,” the woman interjected.

“So why was she begging for money at the store? Don’t you have a place to live?” Richard asked a bit softer.

Molly’s mother blushed deeply and then said, “It was all my daughter’s initiative. She decided to help me out. You see, I work from home as a manager and have to process hundreds of orders a day, but my laptop is old and breaks down often, so Molly decided to earn some money to buy me a new one.”

Clearing the Air

“She didn’t tell me anything about it and went out begging on the street pretending to be an orphan. Honestly, I only found out about it today. We’re not poor if that’s what you’re thinking.”

Richard shook his head. “Well, what a family. You deserve each other.”

Molly’s mother snorted indignantly. “No worse than yours, by the way. You’re one to talk. You brought home a strange girl from the street without thinking that she might have parents. I was about to go to the police to report my daughter missing.”

After a moment of thought, the businessman backed off. “All right, let’s forget this regrettable incident and stay friends. My name’s Richard, by the way. Would you and your daughter like to come in for some tea?”

A New Friendship

“I’m Jessica. Well, we sure wouldn’t refuse a cup of hot tea. Isn’t that right, Molly?” the woman replied with a smile.

“Of course, Mommy! Kevin is so nice and he has lots of toys and there’s a pool behind the house. Mom, can I play a little more with Kevin today?” the little girl pleaded.

Jessica exchanged meaningful looks with Richard and smiled. “Well, that’s not up to me anymore. It’s up to Kevin’s father. Although the weather is very nice today, why don’t we all have a picnic together?”

Richard gladly embraced the idea. “That sounds like a great idea. We can have a barbecue and play tennis.”

A Miracle Occurs

Having made a unanimous decision, all four of them went back to Richard’s house. It was a truly memorable day off. There was everything: lively games, a hearty lunch followed by swimming in the pool, and an evening movie in front of the huge TV screen.

But what happened next shocked Richard to the core. At some point, wanting to catch Molly during their hide-and-seek game, Kevin got up from his wheelchair and ran after her.

And what was even more surprising is he didn’t seem to feel any pain or discomfort. Seeing his son overcome his inner psychological barrier, Richard burst into tears.

Jessica silently approached him from behind and touched his shoulder. After that memorable incident, Molly and Jessica moved into Richard’s house.

Kevin was on the path to healing, and soon his father stowed away the wheelchair. A month later, Richard and Jessica got married. As for Kevin and Molly, they quickly started calling each other brother and sister, rejoicing at the fact that their lives intersected at such a fateful moment.
