I Saved A Homeless Man And A Child During A Blizzard. Then He Pointed At My Sister’s Photo And Started Sobbing. What Should I Do?
Michael’s Story
It took a lot of effort for Michael to say something that would literally turn Kimberly’s life upside down.
“Yes, ma’am, I’m sure. Darcy died in childbirth. Bobby is her son. Unfortunately, I was having problems with the law at the time. I ended up in prison on a false accusation, but when I got out, it was already too late.”
Michael continued, “After the death of his mother, Bobby ended up in an orphanage. It took me a lot of time and effort to prove my rights. I grew up without parents and didn’t want my son to have to go through that too,” Michael said, stammering at every word.
It was only now that Kimberly started to understand what was actually happening. Apparently, having moved to another state, Darcy fell in love with Michael and got pregnant.
“But why didn’t she tell our mother or me? And how did you end up in our town?” Kimberly asked, having pulled herself together.
Michael lowered his eyes but still found the strength to answer. “Darcy didn’t want her mother to think of her as a failure. She wanted to start a new life, which is why she decided to sever all ties with her past. And Bobby and I ended up here by accident. We were planning to move across the state to stay with my friend. He promised to help me find work and a more permanent place to stay. I need to take care of my son now.”
A Place to Call Home
Kimberly looked lovingly at Bobby, and tears welled up in her eyes. How could she have known that by taking in a homeless man, she would be helping her own nephew?
“I’m sorry, ma’am. I must have hurt you, but God knows I’m telling the truth,” Michael added.
Kimberly wiped away a tear and cautiously approached the sleeping boy.
“Bobby really does look like Darcy: the same curly hair and characteristic cut of the eyes,” the woman whispered and straightened the blanket.
Then she invited Michael to follow her into the kitchen to have a more in-depth conversation.
“What are you planning on doing next? Do you want to continue traveling around the country, or are you going to settle down in one place?” Kimberly asked, sounding rather friendly.
But frankly, Michael didn’t really have an answer for any of those questions. The boy needed a permanent place and comfort, and Michael’s nomadic life wouldn’t give him any of that. Therefore, having weighed all the pros and cons, Kimberly offered Michael to stay at her house.
“Let Bobby settle down a bit. I’m sure Mr. Mitchell will find you a job on the farm, and the house is large enough for all of us to live here,” Kimberly voiced her thoughts.
Michael’s first instinct was to reject the offer, but seeing the sincere concern in Kimberly’s eyes, he decided to accept it instead.
Fire in the Stables
Kimberly wasn’t mad at Michael, especially now that she got to meet her nephew because of him and could learn how Darcy lived all this time. The next day, Kimberly went to the farm and asked Mr. Mitchell to help Michael with the job.
Of course, the cautious old man was distrustful of the formerly homeless person at first and gave him the most difficult and low-paying job. Now Michael had to clean the cow sheds and maintain order in the stables from dawn to dusk. Despite the fact that it was hard work, the man liked it. It was much better than wandering around the country in search of a piece of bread and a roof over his head.
Unfortunately, the other farm workers disliked Michael from the moment they met, mistaking him for a thief or a swindler. The most offensive part was the fact that the man worked tirelessly and didn’t even think of doing anything illegal. However, returning home to Kimberly’s house at the end of the workday, Michael never complained or showed his displeasure.
Little Bobby was happy to meet his father and always ran out to be the first one to greet him. Meanwhile, Kimberly cooked dinner and set the table. Unbeknownst to himself, Michael grew very attached to the woman of the house and started developing sincere feelings for her. The young people chatted about everything in the world and enjoyed each other’s company immensely.
Time passed, but the farm workers still treated Michael with disdain and distrust. One day, going home after a hard day’s work, the man noticed a distinct smell of burning in the air. Trying to find the source of the smell, Michael saw that the stable roof was engulfed in flames.
Without hesitating even for a second, the man rushed to save the horses who were trapped inside the burning building. There were also cow sheds nearby, and if the fire were to spread, the farm would suffer enormous damage. Despite the hot flames, Michael led the horses out of the stable, and a few minutes later, he did the exact same with the cattle.
A Hero and a Husband
Thanks to his bravery, the animals managed to survive, which made the old man Mitchell incredibly happy. Michael also called the firefighters; they arrived soon and managed to extinguish the fire. The cause of the fire turned out to have been the faulty wiring, which had a short circuit and thus set the stable on fire.
It was only thanks to Michael’s courage and decisive actions that tragedy and many deaths of the farm animals were avoided. After this incident, he was no longer perceived as a potential thief but was instead considered to be a real hero. Little Bobby was very proud of his father, who risked his life to save the unfortunate animals of the farm, and Kimberly also saw Michael in a completely different light.
A month after that incident, they held a small wedding ceremony, forever tying their lives together. Looking at Michael and Kimberly, the locals were confident that the newlyweds would be faithful spouses and loving parents, not only for Bobby but also for the kids that they would eventually have together.
