My Boss Said “Know Your Place, You’re Just A Cleaner” After Getting Me Pregnant. He Fired Me While My Baby Brother Was Dying In The Hospital. What Should I Do Now?
The Struggles of Dolores Carter
Dolores Carter worked as an assistant at a grocery store, and everyone in the neighborhood knew her. First of all, they knew her because she was a single mother, and secondly, because of the number of kiddos she had.
It just so happened that Dolores already had three children, and she was pregnant with twins. Unfortunately, both her acquaintances and colleagues disapproved of her lifestyle and condemned the woman for it. Dolores was 43 years old and was used to being criticized all the time, so it didn’t cause her any discomfort.
The most surprising thing was that the woman didn’t really know when her life took such an unfortunate turn, landing her in a rather miserable situation. According to Dolores herself, all of her kiddos had different fathers, but not a single one of them ever had been present in their kiddos’ lives. The oldest child was 20-year-old Evelyn, and the youngest one was 10-year-old Maggie.
Being the only man in the family, 18-year-old Simon always got into trouble and was considered to be a bully by his peers. It wasn’t hard to understand why he behaved that way; being young and hot-tempered, it was impossible for him to endure the ridicule of his peers over the cheap, worn-out clothes he had to wear.
Despite her rage, little Maggie tried to keep the house neat and tidy while her mother and sister were at work. The girl could easily cook a simple lunch or dinner. Of course, her meals were nothing like the restaurant food, but on the other hand, it would be foolish to expect that much of a ten-year-old girl.
Since Dolores Carter had a drinking problem, her friends were all rather dysfunctional people. Meanwhile, other people in town were sure that the fathers of the three children were also among her drinking buddies. Dolores, however, preferred not to talk about it and tried to keep her personal life secret.
But how could she keep it a secret when she was eight months pregnant? Neither her loose clothing nor the frequent days off that Dolores took helped her achieve that.
Evelyn’s Burden and Dreams
Whenever the immoral woman needed someone to sub in for her at work, she asked her oldest daughter to do it. Thus, Evelyn became her faithful helper. Of course, Evelyn wasn’t exactly happy to spend 10 or 12 hours a day working instead of studying.
Nevertheless, the young woman couldn’t stand up to her mother. As bad as it was, her family meant everything to Evelyn, especially since they were all she really had. It was very hard to make friends in her situation, and therefore she devoted all of herself to her siblings.
Meanwhile, Dolores didn’t burden herself with excessive care for her kiddos and preferred to while away her free time in the backyard with a can of beer in her hands. Evelyn rarely tried to reason with her mother and mostly talked to Maggie, who listened to her and tried to help.
“How did Dolores manage to raise such great daughters being the mess that she is? She’s making their lives miserable,” People who knew the family used to say.
Since her mother’s due date was coming up, Evelyn was getting very anxious. “Here we go again. Now we’ll have to take care of the babies too. Sure, it’s not that hard, but when will I ever get to take care of myself?” Evelyn thought sadly.
Deep down, the young woman knew that this wasn’t the kind of life she wanted because what she wanted was to perform on stage. To be in the spotlight and getting standing ovations from the audience. Few people knew that ever since she was a child, Evelyn had been dreaming of singing on stage and becoming a famous performer.
The young woman was rather talented, but given her family situation, dreaming of a singing career was naive at the very least. Sometimes when Evelyn was alone, she would sing some popular songs, imagining herself on a big stage with crowds of people watching her. This was the only hobby the young woman had, the only thing that could distract her from the problems in her family, which were all caused by her failure of a mother.
New Additions and New Troubles
Several days later, the life of the Carter family changed forever. Dolores started getting contractions right in the middle of her shift, which nearly caused the store owner to faint as he was terrified to see his employee doubled down in pain. Choosing not to wait for an ambulance, Martin Hill personally took Dolores to the hospital, thus making the doctor’s job much easier.
Having been through it all three times already, Dolores took the birth of the twins rather calmly. The woman didn’t seem the least bit phased by the fact that she now had five children to take care of. They knew Dolores well at the hospital and treated her according to her reputation.
“Seeing a woman lead that kind of lifestyle in our age and time simply didn’t fit into the chief’s view of the world.”
Having given birth to two beautiful boys, Dolores named them Patrick and Liam after her favorite actors. Since the doctors didn’t see any issues with the woman’s health, she was discharged from the hospital a week later. Now there were two problems that Evelyn had to deal with: taking care of the newborn brothers and working at the store.
Their mother was in no hurry to get back to her job and insisted that she needed to take time off to rest. Sighing sadly, Evelyn exchanged glances with Maggie and realized that her sister was thinking the same thing.
