My Boss Said “Know Your Place, You’re Just A Cleaner” After Getting Me Pregnant. He Fired Me While My Baby Brother Was Dying In The Hospital. What Should I Do Now?
However, the situation with Dolores was at least somewhat less stable while her son Simon was having serious problems with the law. Deprived of parental care and affection, the young man got in with a bad crowd that was robbing shops and small booths with them.
During one of the successful robberies, Simon got caught on the surveillance camera of one of the shops. Dolores learned it all from the police officer who detained her son.
“So what’s going to happen to my boy now?” The woman asked, looking sincerely concerned.
“He will have to answer for his crimes before the law. And although I can’t tell the future, I’m pretty sure he’s going to get sentenced to three or four years in prison,” The officer answered.
It was impossible to say for sure whether Dolores’s concern was sincere or if she was simply playing the role of an unfortunate woman with a difficult fate yet again. But there was no doubt that the fountains of her tears were real.
“Lord, why are you doing this to me? Why can’t we just live like a normal family?” Evelyn thought with tears in her eyes.
The young woman loved her brother very much and was ready to do virtually anything to keep him out of prison. Unfortunately, even though the family pulled all of their savings and hired a good lawyer, there was no keeping Simon out of prison. The only thing that the lawyer managed to achieve was to reduce the sentence to three years instead of four that the prosecutor was asking for.
The situation with Simon made Dolores lose her bearings for a couple of months. Trying to find solace at the bottom of a bottle, the mother started drinking even more than she did before, which only aggravated her already unenviable situation.
“Mom, you can’t keep doing that. You have two babies, your son is in prison, and your youngest daughter is forced to skip school to take care of the kids,” Evelyn said, trying to awaken at least something resembling motherly feelings in Dolores.
“The times are tough for everyone, but you have to help your family, especially since Liam and Patrick are your brothers,” Dolores objected.
A Tragic Night
The woman’s alcohol-clouded mind refused to accept the situation and take responsibility for her family. Evelyn understood that it couldn’t go on like that forever and that sooner or later the mother would have to face the music. If the young woman could only have known how soon it would actually happen.
One day, as the time was approaching midnight, Evelyn felt a distinct smell of burning. The young woman was about to go to bed when a barely noticeable gray smoke started pouring in from the next room.
“Fire! Dear God, the house is on fire!” An alarming thought flashed through the young woman’s mind.
Having woken Maggie up, Evelyn told her to dress the babies and to get ready to go outside. The young woman had already realized that the smoke was coming from her mother’s room. She must have been smoking in bed again.
However, when Evelyn tried to open the bedroom door, her face immediately got doused with so much heat that the ends of her hair got charred. Having run up to the window and opened it, Evelyn helped Maggie out. Then she passed the babies over to her sister one by one, after which she got out herself.
The fire spread so fast that trying to save their mother was even out of the question. The fire engulfed the entire house, and Evelyn was left with three young kiddos in her care.
The firefighters arrived at the scene, but unfortunately, they were forced to admit that they were powerless against the wall of fire that enveloped the old wooden house. Some of them believed that smoking in bed had caused the fire, while others blamed it on the faulty wiring which hadn’t been changed since the times of Lyndon Johnson. But Evelyn didn’t really care what it was.
The woman’s mother was dead, and the realization of this fact shook her to the core. Thus, Evelyn had to make funeral arrangements all the while taking care of her younger siblings. At that point, the young woman learned what being truly desperate meant.
“A brother in prison, a dead mother, no house, and three kids to take care of,” Evelyn thought with tears in her eyes.
A New Beginning and a Bad Boss
Fortunately, Evelyn managed to find a distant aunt living in one of the farms in Ohio, and she agreed to let Maggie and the twins stay with her for a little while. Of course, Evelyn wasn’t going to stay there as well; she was going to use this time to find a new place to live so she could take the kiddos back.
After everything that happened, the owner of the store didn’t want to have anything to do with the Carter family, so Evelyn had to look for a new job too. The woman went by a dozen places before she finally got offered a job as a cleaner at a trading company. Since the salary wasn’t too bad, Evelyn was happy to accept the job offer.
As per the young woman’s job description, she was supposed to clean both the office and the territory adjacent to it. The director of the firm was an imposing man of about 45 named Glenn Stone. Being a successful businessman, the man always made sure to take care of himself.
Mr. Stone got beauty procedures in salons, went swimming, and trained at the gym until his body would no longer obey him. Since Evelyn was a very attractive young woman, Glenn Stone took a liking to her as soon as she started working at the office. The experienced older man immediately surrounded the new cleaning lady with such care and attention that she never knew before in her life.
