Poor Older Woman Is Mistreated On A Luxury Cruise Ship. Then They Learned Who She Is
“Madam, these suites are only available to VIP travelers.”
The crew member turned to her and said,
“I suggest you look for your lodgings,”
turning her attention away from her to smile brightly at a handsome, well-dressed man who also needed assistance.
Then Ms. Marshall decided to lag behind a group of people who passed by her. It looked like they knew where they were going.
She must have been the only redneck in the place who had never been on a cruise. In addition to being poor and appearing poor, she was also an older woman, which made it even more apparent that nobody wanted to be close to her.
Ms. Edith would try to make a point when someone said something to her, but they would usually be evasive and walk away, leaving her alone once more.
They then arrived at a location marked “Executive Suite.” This was not where Ms. Marshall was supposed to be.
The woman started to worry. Her arms were shaking because she’d been trying hard to carry her bags there.
She looked at her watch now and then. A young crew member finally noticed how restless the elderly woman looked and offered to take her bags.
“I have no idea where my place is, young man,”
she said humbly.
“This cruise is massive.”,
The young man asked to see her ticket and was surprised when she handed it to him. He hadn’t expected her to be a premium suite traveler.
But the young man didn’t waste much time passing judgment before picking up Ms. Marshall’s luggage and escorting her to her room.
The country girl from Florida felt lighter now. She was no longer alone and would finally reach her cabin.
It looked like everything was going to work out as planned. She followed the young man until they entered a beautiful and opulent area full of other travelers.
“Your ticket says you belong here. Now you can follow this line, all right?”
the young man told her, leaving her luggage on the ground.
“I’ll be right back to help you,”
before he left to take care of other things.
The problem was that the suitcases were left on the floor, in the way of other people, and a man, who appeared to be a millionaire, felt uncomfortable and decided to speak up.
“That’s all I need. I pay top dollar to stay in a luxurious and peaceful place, and I have to deal with this? Ma’am, why don’t you find your cabin and leave us alone?”
he said. She tried to counter:
“But my ticket is in this very sector, sir.”,
The man just frowned and said it wasn’t possible. The sailor returned and observed the ensuing mess.
He quickly took Ms. Marshall’s ticket and showed it to him, confirming what she said.
“I can’t believe we’ve reached such a low level. When did the rabble of this country begin to be able to come on a cruise like this?”
These words completely shocked Ms. Edith, leaving her speechless. She wanted to cry.
She had no idea why that man and others were offended by her mere presence. Some people criticized the man for his speech because they felt it was inappropriate to speak in that tone to an older woman.,
Others, on the other hand, agreed with the man and thought it was absurd to have that “type of people” in the first class of a cruise ship.
“I would like to know how that old woman got here. Was it charity? Did she win a radio giveaway or raffle? Poor people love a raffle, right?”
said one person.
This hurt Ms. Marshall. She could not contain her tears as she put her hands to her face.
Finally, a young woman saw what the man did to the elderly woman and came to her strict defense:
“Don’t you see that she has as much right to be here as you do? Aren’t you ashamed to talk like that to an older woman? Would you talk to her that way if she were your mother?”,
Suddenly, everyone started to speak. The most expensive wing of the cruise had been turned into an arena, with rich people bickering and attacking each other.
Feeling defeated and tired, the older woman left her bags in a corner and walked away from that place. She had given up on finding her quarters.
The Secret in the Pocket
The sailor who had just helped her asked everyone to calm down before approaching the older woman to do the same. Edith’s voice was shaky and choked.,
Finally, the sailor led her to an armchair in the lobby and helped her sit down. At that moment, she let an old photograph fall to the floor.
The sailor moved quickly to retrieve it for her. He saw that there was a boy in the picture and handed it back to her.
“Madam, this must mean a great deal to you. It wasn’t in your luggage or wallet, but in your pocket.”
He remarked,
“You must really like the boy in the photo.”
Ms. Marshall took the picture back and looked at it fondly, stroking the face imprinted on it. Then she smiled for the first time since arriving at the Miami Port.,
“This is my son, right here.”
She proudly replied,
“He’s a captain; the boy in the picture is in charge of this cruise ship today.”
Everyone who was arguing stopped when they heard this. Suddenly they were seized by the mystery that now emanated from that humble old woman who had neither good shoes nor suitable dresses but was the mother of the most important man on that ship.
Then, without taking her eyes off the photo, she began her story. Ms. Marshall was from a low-income family in the south of the country.,
Her parents had a small ranch, and it was thanks to it that they managed to escape hunger during the difficult times of her childhood. Edith was the eldest of three children, responsible for their upbringing.
Lilly was the youngest and in poor health. Edith had lost count of the times she had to miss school to care for her while her mother worked in the fields.
A few months after the Pearl Harbor attack, Edith’s father had to join the military. After fighting the Japanese, he was sent to the war front in France, where he never returned.,
