They Found A Secret Passage Behind A Closet. Going Inside, They Were Shocked By What They Saw…
A Lonely End
Thus, the now elderly Cheryl and Kyle were left all alone at their home. As they got older, it became more difficult for them to take care of and maintain order in the house. The children who finally visited their parents every weekend were now coming less and less often, which naturally caused a lot of grief for the Edwards couple.
And soon their family suffered a great loss. Because of his disability and the injuries he sustained, Kyle’s health was never great. And although he held on to life for as long as he could, Mr. Edwards passed away after a long illness three days before his birthday.
Devastated, Cheryl called her children to tell them the terrible news, but unfortunately, they behaved very strangely.
“But Mom, you can handle the funeral on your own, right? I have exams coming up and other problems too. You can have Mrs. Parker help you, right?”
Darcy answered, her voice ice cold.
“But honey, it’s your father we’re talking about. How’s that even possible? What could be more important than your father’s funeral?”
Cheryl asked, having trouble holding back her tears. But Darcy didn’t even listen to what her mother had to say; she simply hung up the phone, thereby cutting off the already fragile family ties.
Then Mrs. Edwards called Patrick, but she already knew what he was going to say. The young man claimed to be extremely busy, and even though he promised to sort things out and come home, his tone let her know that it would never happen. Poor Mrs. Edwards had to bury her husband alone, and standing by the fresh grave, she cried her eyes out, smearing the bitter tears all over her face.
The Secret Behind the Closet
She and Kyle devoted their lives to their children, and now she was devastated to realize that her parental love and care were never appreciated. After the death of her husband, Mrs. Edwards seemed to immediately have lost a lot of weight. She could spend hours looking at the picture of her late husband, remembering the times when they were happy.
Cheryl survived her spouse by only three years. She didn’t die of illness but rather of grief and depression which incinerated the soul of the unfortunate woman. Same as with their father, Patrick and Darcy didn’t attend Cheryl’s funeral, entrusting this mournful responsibility to Mrs. Parker, the neighbor, and their mother’s colleagues at the homeless shelter.
Mrs. Edwards was buried in a mask that covered her face. For many years, none of those present at the funeral had the courage to come up to her and take it off. Most of the neighbors condemned Mrs. Edwards’ children for their behavior. Their parents did anything and everything they could all their life to make sure their kids had everything they ever needed.
Darcy and Patrick Edwards came to their hometown six months later, only to sell their parental house and share the proceeds from the deal. After they picked up the keys from their neighbor, the young people decided to clean up the house as well as get rid of the old furniture and their parents’ old clothes. It was a lot of work, but Patrick and Darcy didn’t despair, warmed by the thought of the potential sale of the house and the money they’d get for it.
As they pushed aside a huge antique closet in the hall, the two siblings were surprised to find a wooden door behind it which led to some unknown room. Patrick had to use force to break the lock on the door. Their hearts were beating with excitement as they entered the room that looked like a pantry.
A Heroic Past Revealed
Turning on the light, the young people saw a shoe box on a table covered with dust and cobwebs. Darcy quickly opened the box, her eyes burning with impatience, and gasped in surprise. Inside the box was a gold medal in a neat case issued in the name of her mother as well as a newspaper clipping yellowed with age.
Quickly running through it, the girl handed it to her brother and began to cry quietly. As it turned out, the article, which took up an entire spread of the weekly publication, spoke of the heroic feat of a medical student, Cheryl Summers. She managed to save several people in a fire that broke out in a terrible car accident.
A bus driven by the young Kyle Edwards was hit by a truck at full speed. Among other things, the impact damaged the fuel tank, which is why the bus caught on fire. Cheryl Sommers, who was one of the passengers on the ill-fated bus, came to her senses before the others and immediately began to pull the victims out of the burning cabin.
In the collision with the truck, Kyle Edwards’ legs got clamped in the cabin, so unfortunately he couldn’t help the brave girl. Meanwhile, Cheryl didn’t spare herself, running back and forth rescuing passengers, including small children. That morning, with the help of the eyewitnesses, Cheryl managed to get all the passengers, including the driver Kyle Edwards, out of the burning bus.
Saving others, the selfless girl didn’t even realize that she had also gotten burned, which left her beautiful face and scars. Cheryl was awarded a medal for her courage while the accident and her heroism was even covered in the local newspaper. As for what happened next, Patrick and Darcy figured it out on their own.
Regret and Redemption
Of course, Cheryl didn’t feel much joy over the awards since from that day on she had to also hide her face behind a mask. She dropped out of the university, suffering from the stress caused by the accident and being the center of attention of the townspeople who all looked at her with sympathetic pity. Cheryl moved to a neighboring city where no one knew her.
After getting a job as a nurse in a homeless shelter, Cheryl began to live the inconspicuous life of a grey mouse. A few years later, a disabled young man in a wheelchair appeared on the doorstep of her house. Cheryl recognized him as the bus driver Kyle, who lost his legs in that terrible accident.
Feeling embarrassed, the young man admitted that he had been looking for her for many years. He also asked Cheryl to move in with him, hinting at the possibility of marriage. To his surprise, the girl agreed without any hesitation, and as their marriage life would later prove, it was the right decision.
Both Darcy and Patrick had tears in their eyes as they gave the house key to Mrs. Parker while they went to the cemetery. They went to their parents’ graves and asked for their forgiveness. All their lives they were ashamed of their father’s disability and the mask on their mother’s face, having no idea what they had to go through.
Darcy and Patrick changed their minds, deciding not to sell the house. They chose to renovate it instead and shingle the roof. In a few years, they will have children of their own whom they will tell about the glorious past of their grandparents sitting by the fireplace in their family home.
